Grid Off: Grid not within specification

This guide helps troubleshoot a "Grid Not Within Specification" error on an Autarco inverter. This error indicates that the grid's voltage and/or frequency are outside the inverter's acceptable operating range, preventing it from safely connecting.

Why it's problematic

Connecting to an out-of-specification grid can damage the inverter and potentially affect other connected appliances. The inverter disconnects to protect itself and maintain grid stability.

Possible causes

  • Utility company issues: Temporary fluctuations or prolonged outages in the grid voltage or frequency can cause this error.
  • Local grid conditions: Variations in voltage or frequency due to heavy loads or other local grid conditions may exceed the inverter's acceptable range.
  • Inaccurate grid settings: The inverter may be configured with incorrect grid parameters or protection limits.

Before you begin

Safety First: Working with electrical equipment always involves risks. Ensure you are qualified and follow appropriate safety precautions. Disconnect the inverter from both AC and DC sources before performing any physical inspection or adjustments.

Gather Information: Before starting troubleshooting, have the inverter manual on hand. You should also gather information about the inverter model and serial number, the installation date, and the PV array configuration (number of panels, capacity, and number of strings).

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Check the grid voltage: Verify if the grid voltage is within the acceptable limits specified in the inverter's manual and local regulations.
  2. Monitor the grid frequency: Use a multimeter or other measuring device to ensure the grid frequency is within the acceptable range.
  3. Contact your utility provider: Inquire about any known grid issues or planned maintenance that might affect voltage or frequency.
  4. Verify and Adjust Grid Settings (Certified Installers Only): If permitted by your utility provider and local regulations, a certified installer may need to adjust the inverter's grid voltage and frequency settings to match the current grid parameters.

Verifying the solution

Once the grid parameters stabilize or the inverter settings are corrected, the inverter should reconnect to the grid. The display should indicate a "Generating" status, showing normal operation.

If the problem is not resolved

If the error persists after these steps, there might be a persistent grid problem or a potential fault within the inverter.

  • As a system owner: In this case, contact the inverter installer or distributor for further assistance. You can find the details of your installer in the MyAutarco app.
  • As a certified installer: Contact Autarco Support, you can submit a support case via Helios.
