LowTemp.AMB: Low ambient temperature

The "LowTemp.AMB" error indicates that the inverter is operating below its recommended temperature range.

Why it's problematic

  • Low temperatures can significantly reduce the battery's capacity and performance, leading to reduced energy storage and backup power availability.
  • Operating a battery at low temperatures can also accelerate its degradation and shorten its lifespan.

Possible causes

  • Cold ambient temperature: The most common cause is simply the battery being exposed to a cold environment, especially during winter months.
  • Poor battery insulation: Insufficient insulation around the battery can allow heat to escape, making it more susceptible to temperature drops.
  • Faulty battery heater (if equipped): Some battery systems have built-in heaters to maintain optimal temperatures. A malfunctioning heater can result in low battery temperatures.

Before you begin

Safety First: Working with electrical equipment always involves risks. Ensure you are qualified and follow appropriate safety precautions. Disconnect the inverter from both AC and DC sources before performing any physical inspection or adjustments.

Gather Information: Before starting troubleshooting, have the inverter manual on hand. You should also gather information about the inverter model and serial number, the installation date, and the PV array configuration (number of panels, capacity, and number of strings).

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Check the ambient temperature: Measure the temperature near the battery using a thermometer. Compare it to the battery manufacturer's recommended operating temperature range.
  2. Improve battery insulation: If the ambient temperature is low, consider adding insulation around the battery to help retain heat. You can use materials like foam insulation or blankets specifically designed for battery enclosures.
  3. Verify battery heater operation (if equipped): If the battery has a heater, check if it's functioning correctly. Refer to the battery manual for instructions on how to test and troubleshoot the heater.
  4. Relocate the battery (if feasible): If possible, move the battery to a warmer location, such as a heated garage or basement, where temperatures are more stable.

Verifying the solution

Once you've addressed the temperature issue, allow the battery some time to warm up. The error message should disappear from the inverter's display as the battery temperature rises within the acceptable range. You can monitor the battery temperature through the inverter's display or any connected monitoring systems.

If the problem is not resolved

If the error persists after following all the above steps, there might be an internal fault within the inverter or the battery itself.
