PV ISO-PRO: Ground Fault

This guide addresses the “Ground Fault” error in Autarco inverters.

A ground fault is a serious electrical issue that occurs when electricity flows through an unintended path to the ground. This can be dangerous as it can lead to electric shocks, fires, and damage to equipment.

Possible causes

  • Damaged cables or connections
  • Moisture or debris in the inverter or wiring
  • Faulty grounding system
  • Internal fault within the inverter

Before you begin

Safety First: Working with electrical equipment always involves risks. Ensure you are qualified and follow appropriate safety precautions. Disconnect the inverter from both AC and DC sources before performing any physical inspection or adjustments.

Gather Information: Before starting troubleshooting, have the inverter manual on hand. You should also gather information about the inverter model and serial number, the installation date, and the PV array configuration (number of panels, capacity, and number of strings).

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Restart the inverter. This can sometimes clear temporary faults.
  2. Check the ground conductor using a clamp meter. If there is current flowing through the ground conductor, this indicates a ground fault.
  3. Inspect all cables and connections for damage. Look for any signs of pinching, crimping, or other damage. Tighten any loose connections.
  4. Check the inverter’s surroundings. Ensure there is adequate ventilation and no direct sunlight on the inverter, especially in hot weather.
  5. Check the AC and DC connections.

Verifying the solution

Once you have completed the above steps, restart the inverter and monitor it for the "Ground Fault" error. You can check the inverter’s display for the error message, and also monitor the system’s power production to ensure it is functioning correctly.

If the problem is not resolved

If the error persists after following all the above steps, there might be an internal fault within the inverter.

  • As a system owner: In this case, contact the inverter installer or distributor for further assistance. You can find the details of your installer in the MyAutarco app.
  • As a Certified Installer: If you are a certified installer and have exhausted all troubleshooting steps, contact Autarco Support for further guidance. You can submit a support case via Helios.
