With solar panels and a home battery, you can do more than just increase self-consumption. Depending on your setup, you can also create financial value by reacting to electricity market prices or by supporting the stability of the electricity grid.

Two concepts are often mentioned in this context:

  • Grid services / imbalance trading

  • Smart battery optimization using EPEX SPOT prices

Although they sound similar, they serve different purposes and work in very different ways. This article explains both in simple terms and shows how they compare.


What are Grid Services / Imbalance Trading?

Keeping the electricity grid balanced

At every moment, electricity production and consumption must be exactly equal. If this balance is disturbed, the grid frequency becomes unstable, which can cause outages.

Imbalances happen constantly, for example:

  • Clouds reduce solar production unexpectedly

  • Wind speeds change suddenly

  • Demand is higher or lower than forecast

The grid operator (in the Netherlands: TenneT) corrects these mismatches using the imbalance market.


Imbalance trading in simple terms

Imbalance trading is a mechanism where flexibility is used to restore balance on the grid:

  • If there is too little electricity, assets are asked to produce or discharge

  • If there is too much electricity, assets are asked to consume or charge

The price for these corrections is called the imbalance price, and it can change every 15 minutes (or even faster).

This is not a classic “free market” like a stock exchange. Prices are a direct result of what the grid needs at that moment.


How a home battery can provide grid services

A home battery can participate (usually via an aggregator or energy company) by:

  • Discharging when the grid is short on power

  • Charging when there is excess power

If your battery helps solve the imbalance, you may receive a financial compensation.

Example – grid service:
There is suddenly too much electricity on the grid due to high wind production. Your battery is instructed to charge quickly, helping stabilize the grid. In return, you receive a payment via your energy contract or aggregator.


What is Smart Battery Optimization Using EPEX SPOT Prices?

EPEX SPOT in short

EPEX SPOT is the day-ahead electricity market in many European countries.

  • Electricity prices are determined per hour

  • Prices for tomorrow are known in advance

  • Prices can be very low (or even negative) or very high, depending on supply and demand


Smart battery behavior on EPEX SPOT

When you have:

  • A dynamic electricity contract

  • A home battery

  • An Energy Management System (EMS)

…the EMS can plan battery usage based on hourly EPEX SPOT prices.

Typical behavior:

  • Charge the battery when prices are low

  • Use or export energy when prices are high

This is often called price arbitrage.

Example – EPEX SPOT optimization:
At night, the electricity price is €0.04/kWh → the battery charges from the grid.
In the evening, the price rises to €0.30/kWh → the battery powers the home, avoiding expensive imports.

Why This Difference Matters

    “When is electricity cheapest or most expensive for me?”

A system optimized only for EPEX SPOT prices does not automatically provide grid services.
Likewise, participating in imbalance trading does not guarantee the lowest household energy bill.


Can They Be Combined?

In advanced setups, yes.

A sophisticated EMS can:

  • Prioritize household needs

  • Optimize against EPEX SPOT prices

  • Offer remaining flexibility to grid services or imbalance markets

This requires:

  • The right contracts

  • Market access

  • Clear rules on battery availability and minimum state of charge
